FOP spokesman Pat Camden says the incident happened around 8 p.m. CST Sunday at the Western/Cermak Pink Line station on the "L," the city's public transit train system.
Camden says the 55-year-old man held a gun to his head as officers arrived. Then he allegedly pulled another gun and pointed it at them.
Camden tells the Chicago Tribune (http://trib.in/tZRQYm) investigators were trying to determine whether the man tried to provoke officers into shooting him. It's a phenomenon commonly referred to as "suicide by cop."
The Independent Police Review Authority was investigating the case as it does with all police-involved shootings.
