Betty Lee Snyder Smith was born to Adam and Ella Rohrer Snyder on May 3, 1925. She lived her entire life in Lincoln, IL and passed away there on December 28, 2011. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1943 and worked at Clapper’s Tire and Appliance where she met George W. Smith. They were married over their lunch hour on August 25, 1947. Her preferred occupation was mother/homemaker. Once she had grandsons, they named her Nana, and she relished that role. Betty worked in the cafeteria at Lincoln High School and then at Lehn & Fink. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Lincoln, and up until mid-December helped put together the church bulletins every week. She was one of the founding volunteers working at the Lincoln Logan Food Pantry and was a lifetime member of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Betty is survived by her three children; Terri Carey (Daniel) of Madison, Wisconsin and grandsons Christopher and Matthew, Michael Smith of Ogden, Utah and grandson Michael Bryan, and Mary Ellen Smith of San Antonio, TX. Her surviving siblings are Melvin "Buck" Snyder (Lois), Kenneth "Dutch" Snyder (Myra), and Patricia Snyder of Lincoln and Tony Snyder (Mary) of Metamora.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George "Smitty" Smith, sisters Eleanor Pence and Ethelene "Peggy" White, and brother, Robert Snyder.
Visitation will be Friday, December 30, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, 302 Broadway Street, in Lincoln.
Memorials may be made to Lincoln Logan Food Pantry or to the First United Methodist Church in Lincoln.
