There's pressure on the two chambers to reach agreement this week because next week, leading up to the Feb. 28 deadline, Congress will not be in session. The White House has said it "does not object" to the 10-month extension proposed by the House but would prefer stretching the provisions through the end of 2013 because "longer duration provides the necessary certainty and predictability that our nation's intelligence and law enforcement agencies require." Laura Murphy, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Washington legislative office, said it was a mistake to renew the three provisions without added safeguards for privacy. "We urge the Senate to reject this bill and instead make the necessary changes that will bring the Patriot Act in line with the Constitution." ___ The bill is
