Brazilian bishops blast reality shows

[February 18, 2011]  BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) -- Brazil's Catholic bishops are blasting the country's enormously popular reality TV shows, saying they have a "low moral level."

The National Conference of Brazilian Bishops says in a Thursday statement that the reality shows are an "attack on the human dignity of participants, who are fascinated with monetary prizes and a short-lived status as a celebrity."

Brazilian reality shows have often been criticized for sexual innuendo and obscene language used by participants.

The statement calls for an end to "this evil of society" and says that "freedom of expression does not give anyone the right to attack the moral values that sustain society."
