[January 06, 2011]  (AP)  Active weather in the Southeast will begin to wind down Thursday afternoon as the wave of low pressure along the central Gulf Coast moves through the region and exits into the Atlantic Ocean.

HardwareShowers and thunderstorms associated with a trailing cold front are expected to clear out of northern Florida by the afternoon as the front drops southward. A few showers may linger in southern Florida during the evening before the system reaches eastern Cuba by late Thursday night or Friday morning.

To the north, a large vortex spinning over eastern Canada will continue ushering waves of energy and cold, dry air across the Great Lakes and Northeast. Shots of cold air will translate into bitter cold daytime highs during the next few days. Meanwhile, light snow showers are expected to accompany the disturbances across the Great Lakes.

Finally, in the West, a persistent stream of moist onshore flow will spread across the Northwest, fueling more wintry precipitation from the Pacific Northwest through parts of the northern Rockies. Meanwhile, high pressure will dominate the rest of the West with calm weather conditions.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of minus 15 degrees at Merrill, Wis., to a high of 82 degrees at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
