Lincoln birthday celebrations around Logan County

[January 14, 2011]  February is fast approaching and with it brings celebrations around the county to honor the birth of Abraham Lincoln. With so many great sites dedicated to the presence of Abraham Lincoln, there will be plenty of ways to learn about and celebrate a man who made such a local impact.

Postville CourthInsuranceouse State Historic Site will have its annual celebration Feb. 5 to observe Abraham Lincoln's birthday. From noon till 4 p.m., visitors can enjoy presentations and entertainment provided by Guy Fraker and Mike Anderson, as well as John Sutton and friends. Tours will be conducted, and cake and punch will be served. Abraham Lincoln interpreter Gary Simpkins will also visit with guests. For more information regarding this event, call 217-735-4977.

The Knapp-Chestnut-Becker Library Museum in Middletown will celebrate on Feb. 12. They will show the 1939 Henry Fonda film, "The Young Mr. Lincoln," starting at 1 p.m., with refreshments served immediately after. For more information regarding this event, call 217-445-2789.

Mount Pulaski will continue its yearlong 175th anniversary celebration on Feb. 12. To honor the birth of Mr. Lincoln there will be a trial re-enactment with Abraham Lincoln at the Mount Pulaski Courthouse at 2 p.m. Following that will be presentations and entertainment provided by Guy Fraker and Chris Vallilo at 3:30 p.m.

There are additional sites in Logan County to visit not only on Abe's birthday, but any day: Lincoln Heritage Museum on the campus of Lincoln College, the Lincoln christening scene, Stagecoach Inn, Atlanta's Abraham Lincoln interpretation site, 8th Judicial Circuit marker, Logan County Courthouse, the Lincoln Gallery at State Bank of Lincoln, and sites on a downtown Lincoln walking tour.
