In December, Illinois had 46,300 more jobs than in December 2009.
This was the fourth consecutive monthly year-over-year increase.
Only Texas, California and Pennsylvania added more jobs than
Illinois in 2010. Illinois' economy continues to compare favorably
with the national economy. Metro areas recording the largest
declines were Rockford, down 3.3 points to 13.0 percent; Peoria,
down 2.5 points to 8.8 percent; and Decatur, down 2.2 points to 10.4
percent. The Chicago-Joliet-Naperville rate fell 2.0 points to 8.6
percent.
"Falling unemployment rates in every county in our state touches
another milestone on our road to recovery," IDES Director Maureen
O'Donnell said. "Although the economy still is challenged from the
effects of the national recession, the long-term trends continue to
show Illinois is moving forward and adding jobs."
Not seasonally adjusted data compares the current month with the
same month of the previous year. The December 2010 not seasonally
adjusted state rate was 8.8 percent and 10.8 percent last year. The
not seasonally adjusted statewide rate has consistently dropped
since it peaked at 12.2 percent in January 2010. Nationally, the
rate was 9.1 percent in December and 9.7 percent last year. The
national peak was 10.6 percent in January 2010.
The unemployment rate identifies those who are out of work and
looking for work. People not collecting benefits will be reflected
in the rate if they continue to look for work.
