Logan County Board recognizes and congratulates student athletes and coaches

[July 08, 2011]  For the second year running, the Lincoln Junior High School eighth-grade boys basketball team took third place in the Illinois Elementary School Association  Class 8-3A state tournament. The team was composed of Garrett Aeilts, Andre Birts, Max Boch, Shawn Cannon, Cameron Cook, Will Cook, K.J. Fry, Cooper Hake, Aron Hopp, Tim Jackson, Brent Metelko, Griffin Pollock, Eric Sutton and Ryan Thomas and coach Don Aeilts.

Receiving special recognition were:

  • Will Cook -- for his performance in the final period of the game. He helped bring home the victory when he nailed five of seven free throw attempts in the fourth period to help keep their opponents at bay.

  • Top scorers in the final game -- Garrett Aeilts, Cameron Cook, Will Cook and Brent Metelko.
    Two of these young men were also recognized for their top achievements in other sports.

Both the seventh- and eighth-grade Lincoln Junior High School boys track teams brought home third-place plaques at the 2011 track and field sectionals in Rochester.

Eighth-grader Cameron Cook qualified for the state track meet in both the 100-meter dash and the high jump and won the eighth-grade high-jump championship with a winning jump of 6 feet.

Brent Metelko, also an eighth-grader, had a successful season as a wrestler in the 112-pound division, taking fifth place at the state wrestling meet at Northern Illinois University.

Two students of Zion Lutheran School in Lincoln qualified for the statewide Illinois Lutheran State Track Championship.

Anna Sielaff placed third in discus competition and ninth in shot put competition. Ben Steiner placed seventh in shot put.

The Lincoln Junior High School seventh-grade girls track team placed second at the IESA sectional track meet at Rochester.

During sectional competition Holly Davis (left), a seventh-grade athlete, set a milestone for the team by winning four first places.

Sixth-grader Danielle D'Andrea (right) placed second in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.

Davis competed in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the 4x100-meter relay and the long jump at the 2011 IESA state track meet and won third place in the seventh-grade girls long jump.

At state D'Andrea qualified and competed in three events. She placed seventh in the seventh-grade girls 100-meter finals and eighth in the 200-meter finals.
