Lincoln Y is making summer fun

[July 16, 2011]  Summer at the Lincoln Area Y is a fun and busy place to be. At Seven Seas Art Camp, this week's theme, "Reading Rocks," was developed to encourage the kids to find out why and how reading is important. The group of first- through sixth-graders was divided into four teams. Members then chose their team's name -- Pirates, Cardinals, Cool Kids and YMCA Rocks. One of Thursday's projects was to draw a story without words.

Y Summer Day Camp began June 6 and continues to Aug. 19. Children participate in several activities throughout the summer, including field trips and daily visits to the Lincoln Park District pool.

Kids in seventh through ninth grade can attend Y summer programs as part of the Leaders In Training program. Participants assist counselors by helping the children, offering one-on-one attention and being the "big kids" who lead by example. Over time, they learn supervisory, organizing and planning skills from the Y staff and counselors.

When school resumes, the Y will return to before- and after-school programming.

For more information about the opportunities offered through the Lincoln Y, visit the office at 604 Broadway, call 735-3915 or go to www.lincolnymca.org.
