[July 29, 2011] (AP) Active weather will continue over multiple areas of the eastern U.S. on Friday, while sunny and dry weather will persist in the western U.S.

Insurance Tropical Storm Don in the Gulf of Mexico will continue moving northwesterly toward Texas, bringing heavy rain along the Texas coast late Friday evening. In addition, tropical moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will continue to push onshore, triggering showers and thunderstorms in the South and Southeast.

Meanwhile, high pressure settled over the southeastern corner of the country will continue to bring hot and humid weather to most of the eastern half of the United States, with temperatures reaching over 100 and heat indexes between 110 and 120 degrees.

To the north, a low pressure system will push a frontal boundary extending from the Great Lakes to the central Plains, kicking up showers and thunderstorms. High moisture content will aid the development of storms along this front, with possible severe thunderstorms in the central Plains.

In addition, another frontal boundary will move through the Northeast, producing additional showers and thunderstorms. Severe thunderstorms are possible over the New England states.

To the west, high pressure positioned over the Great Basin region will continue to bring sunny and dry weather to most of the western half of the U.S. However, monsoon moisture in the Southwest will kick up scattered showers across the Four Corners and central Rockies.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a morning low of 30 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 107 degrees at Shawnee, Okla.
