The goal of the Zonta International Young
Women in Public Affairs program is to encourage more young women to
participate in public affairs by recognizing a young woman’s
commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership
achievements and dedication to the
advancement of the status of women.
Applicants (age 16-19) are asked to reflect on their voluntary
commitment to their school and their community and the problems
limiting the advancement of the status of women in their own country
and worldwide. The program looks to the young women of today for the
leaders of tomorrow.
Ms. Harmon was named the recipient of this Zonta award because of
her leadership in school activities, community service involvement,
international travel and mission work, and her United Nations trip,
which resulted in her speech about the impact of the United Nations
on slave trafficking.
She intends to pursue a degree in zoology from Western
Illinois University and to eventually work with marine animals.
Zonta International, with
world headquarters in Oak Brook, is a worldwide service organization
of executives in business and the professions working together to
advance the status of women. The Young Women in Public Affairs Award
is one of many programs for women and girls sponsored by Zonta
International. The award is funded by voluntary contributions to the
Zonta International Foundation.
