Once one of the most tightly controlled dictatorships in the region, Tunisian has experienced an explosion of new political movements with some 81 new parties officially registered. In a report issued May 26, however, the electoral commission pointed to "numerous shortcomings and deficiencies" in the organization of the election. It noted in particular that about 3 million Tunisians aren't included on the electoral database and hundreds of thousands others don't have any, or valid, identity cards. The elections are for a constituent assembly meant to write a new constitution that could pave the way for legislative and presidential elections.
