Padres coach Renteria hit in mouth by BP liner

[March 04, 2011]  PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria has been taken to a hospital after being hit in the mouth by a line drive during batting practice.

Renteria went for further evaluation Thursday after the morning accident.

The 49-year-old Renteria is in his first season as San Diego's bench coach. He was the Padres' first-base coach for the previous three years, and has coached in the organization since 2003.

Renteria hit .237 in parts of five major league seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners and Florida Marlins.
