[May 10, 2011]  LONDON (AP) -- The manager of London's subway system says strikes by the largest rail workers' union due to begin next week have been called off.

Members of the Rail Maritime and Transport union who drive subway trains had planned to stage a series of walkouts to protest the dismissal of two drivers.

The union claims the two were fired because they were union activists. One of the men has won his claim of unfair dismissal, while the other man's appeal is pending.

London Underground said Tuesday the union has withdrawn its strike threat following talks between the company and union leaders.
