Kansas backs bill restricting abortion coverage

[May 13, 2011]  TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- The Kansas Legislature has voted to prohibit insurance companies from offering abortion coverage as part of their general health plans except when a woman's life is at risk.

The state House voted 86-30 early Friday in support of a larger bill that included the abortion coverage restrictions. The state Senate passed it Thursday night.

The legislation now goes to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback, who is expected to sign it.

If the bill becomes law, individuals and employers who want abortion coverage would have to buy supplemental policies that cover only abortion.
