[May 14, 2011]  NEW YORK (AP) -- Colleagues, fans and dignitaries are paying a final tribute to New York Daily News cartoonist and columnist Bill Gallo.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly -- a friend and a former Marine, like Gallo -- was delivering one of the eulogies Friday. Kelly says Gallo was so tough that one of his columns compared Marine boot camp to summer camp.

Gallo's beloved characters included George Steinbrenner, Reggie Jackson, Babe Ruth and Joe Namath.

Gallo died Tuesday from complications of pneumonia. He was 88.

Donations can be made to Ring 8, a group that helps disabled fighters; the Police Athletic League; or the Dr. Theodore A. Atlas Foundation.
