[November 14, 2011]  ELK GROVE, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a California Highway Patrol officer was shot and wounded near Sacramento, and the suspected gunman was fatally shot by police.

Sacramento County sheriff's Deputy Jason Ramos says a man in a car with two dogs fired on two CHP officers Sunday during a traffic stop on Highway 99 in Elk Grove, hitting one of them in the wrist and hip.

The officer had surgery at a South Sacramento hospital and is expected to survive.

Ramos says the suspect fled, but his car flipped almost immediately.

Elk Grove officers arrived and surrounded the suspect, who was moving inside the overturned car.

Ramos says when the man wouldn't obey commands, an officer fired two rounds at him.

After the dogs were removed from the car, officers found the suspect dead.
