The Red Lions hit the home court eager to play and handed the MBI
Archers a quick defeat in three sets thanks to senior Lydia
Bunting's 40 set assists, freshman Emma Donnelly's 23 digs, junior
Rachel Langseth's three blocks and five block assists. Well-placed
kills and tips by senior Jamie McFadden (12), sophomore Emily Sheley
(9), and freshmen Alicia Carson (12) and Sammy Nichols (6)
contributed to the victory. Junior Anna DeVillez, sophomore Hannah
Taylor, Nichols and McFadden kept the momentum on their side with
some lengthy serving runs and a total of seven aces.
In spite of
the support from the large home crowd, the second match of the day
proved to be more difficult for the Red Lions as the Trinity Trojans
handed LCU a three-set loss. The Red Lions and the Trojans were
evenly matched throughout the first set with the score tied several
times, even down to the wire at point 23. The Trojans then charged
ahead and secured the last two points for the win. Set two followed
the same pattern until the Red Lions were one point shy of a
victory, when the momentum changed to the Trojans. TIU came back to
rack up five straight points to win the second set. In set three,
the Red Lions allowed the Trojans to gain eight points right out of
the gate and never were able to take the lead, giving the Trojans
the third set and the match.

For the second match, Bunting dished out 26 set assists, McFadden
had nine kills and 14 digs, Sheley had nine kills, and Donnelly and
DeVillez each contributed 12 digs. Nichols helped at the net with
three kills and a block, plus she added 16 serves with no errors.
Reflecting on the loss, co-captain McFadden said: "We put in a
good effort. We learn from our mistakes, and what we take away from
our losses only makes us stronger."
The LCU record now stands at 9-6.
The next match will be at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against
Monmouth College.
