[October 20, 2011] (AP) More active weather is anticipated in the eastern U.S. on Thursday as the deep low pressure system in the Ohio Valley lifts slowly northeastward into eastern Canada. Energy from this system will maintain showers, thunderstorms and strong wind in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley through the start of the day.

Precipitation and winds will taper down during the latter half of the day as the system exits into Canada. A colder air mass will move into the East as this system departs, dropping temperatures from the lower and mid-Mississippi valleys through the Ohio Valley and the Southeast down to about 10 to 15 degrees below average. This may lead to various frost and freeze advisories, watches and warnings Thursday night into Friday morning.

In the West, cool conditions will continue in the Northwest as a trough of low pressure moves through the region. A cold front along the northwestern U.S.-Canada border will stir up areas of light showers from parts of the Pacific Northwest through the northern Rockies. Meanwhile, a broad ridge of high pressure will continue to bring fair weather conditions across the rest of the West.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of 14 degrees at Rugby, N.D., to a high of 96 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
