October 18, 2011]  Mount Pulaski Rotary Club is selling Christmas citrus -- Florida oranges or grapefruit -- at $25 a case. Call 792-5911 to order. The deadline is Nov. 21. Deliveries will be Dec. 9-10.


The Lincoln Writers Club will meet Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Alumni Room at the Lincoln College dining hall. Suggested topics are to write a children's story, a Thanksgiving story or bring a favorite picture with a story. Call 732-2723 for info. All are welcome.


Lincoln Christian University is proud to share the announcement of two graduating students in our area.

The students listed below were among those who completed a degree in the Hargrove School of Adult & Graduate Studies at Lincoln Christian University on Aug. 31:

  • Brandy Nicole Babcock, Lincoln -- Bachelor of Arts

  • Lisa Feese Ramlow, Lincoln -- Master of Arts


San Jose United Methodist Church, 600 S. First St. (First and Linden) is having their annual turkey supper and bazaar from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Menu includes roast turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn and green beans, salad, homemade desserts, and beverages. For dining in the fellowship hall, prices are $9 for adults, $4 for children 4 to 12 years, and children 3 and under eat free. Carryout prices are $9.50 for adults and $4.50 for children. Tickets will be available at the door or may be purchased from church members.

Bazaar booths are the Candy Shop, featuring delicious homemade candies, including caramels, fudge and divinity; Country Store; Christmas and all-occasion cards; Going Green shop, with nearly new items; and Crafts, featuring hand-crafted wooden outdoor-indoor planters, plus Christmas ornaments, hot pads, bookmarks and various other crafts.

Proceeds will benefit missions supported by the United Methodist Women.


AquaLynx hosts a night at Culver's on Monday, Oct. 24. Come out and enjoy a delicious dinner while supporting your local swim team. From 5 to 8 p.m. a portion of all sales will be donated to the swim club. This is a great fundraiser for the club and an opportunity for you to meet your team. Bonus: no dishes to clean when you're done eating.


Two nonfiction books by syndicated columnist Slim Randles have been declared finalists in the New Mexico Book Awards competition.

According to publisher Rio Grande Books, both "Sweetgrass Mornings," an outdoor memoir, and "A Cowboy's Guide to Growing Up Right," advice for young people, were named. The winners will be named in November.

Randles' weekly column, Home Country, is read by nearly 2 million readers in 42 states. His columns are carried by LDN on Saturdays.

Carroll Catholic School announces October Students of the Month.

Each month, the teachers select two students from first to fourth grades and two students from fifth to eighth grades to receive Student of the Month awards.  Students are chosen based upon Christian attitude, cooperativeness, courteousness, self-discipline and effort. October Students of the Month are Rachel Morrow, first grade; Dylan Singleton, third grade; MacKenzie Merreighn, fifth grade; and Jaden Pellinghelli-Drake, sixth grade. 


Chris Miller of the National Weather Service will be the speaker for the Lincoln Woman's Club fall luncheon at noon Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the club building, 230 N. McLean St.   

The devotion will be given by Mary Ellen Martin. Jackie Campbell and Joyce Board will be greeters, and Sandy Johnson, Judy Fairfield and Mary Ellen Martin are the social co-chairwomen, assisted by Alexis Asher and Louann Bleess. 

Members are asked to wear pink in support of cancer survivors and to bring warm socks for the Indian project.


Trick-or-treat hours for the Hartsburg-Emden area will be as follows:

  • Emden -– 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30

  • Hartsburg -– 5-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31
