LCHS board rules on cellphone usage

[October 20, 2011]  The Lincoln Community High School board ruled Monday night on wording for a previously discussed cellphone policy, clarifying when students were to disconnect from the devices. At the September meeting of the handbook committee, chairwoman Marianne Krusz introduced a tentative cellphone policy, but she asked for input as to exactly when students would be restricted from using their phones.

After lengthy discussion, Principal Todd Poelker said there had to be something specific or it would be confusing and too difficult to enforce. Times of arrival for students vary due to early bird classes, breakfast and other activities. A decision was tabled for further consideration by the committee.

When the issue was reintroduced at the meeting Monday, the board voted to clarify the policy by stating that use of a cellphone must cease when a student enters the building.

The board also approved employment of Shanan McLaughlin as assistant girls basketball coach, Jennifer Keith and Laura Schonauer as co-sponsors for Thespians, and Aimee Ellis as Scholastic Bowl coach. The board received Andy McDonald's resignation from his position as assistant baseball coach.

Comparisons were made between this year's freshmen class enrollment and the tentative incoming enrollment of next year's freshmen class, in order to evaluate the district's needs in personnel and budget. The Logan County Economic Development Master Plan was reviewed. No further action was taken on agenda items.

There will be a public hearing Nov. 21 at 6:45 p.m. on the board's proposal to charge $150 for driver's education. The regular monthly board meeting will follow at 7 p.m.
