[October 24, 2011] (AP) Active weather in the Midwest will spread eastward on Monday as a cold front moves into the Great Lakes.

Light to moderate scattered showers will form ahead of the front in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. A few areas of locally heavy precipitation with strong winds will form in the northern regions Michigan during the early morning as the front moves across Lake Michigan. Showers associated with this system will reach the lower Great Lakes, parts of the Northeast, and the northern Mid-Atlantic by Monday night.

To the south of this front, a weakening frontal system will move into the Southeast. Only a few showers will remain possible along the Gulf Coast.

In the West, a trough of low pressure will bring precipitation to parts of the Northwest as associated disturbances move into the Intermountain West. Cold air over the region may support snow shower accumulations of 3 to 6 inches in the mountains of western Montana and Wyoming. Accumulations in the higher peaks may reach up to 8 inches.

Meanwhile, high pressure will provide generally calm conditions with fair skies and warm temperatures to the rest of the West and the central and southern Plains. Areas of the desert Southwest and parts of southern Texas will reach into the upper 80s to mid-90s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a morning low of 17 degrees at Gunnison, Colo., to a high of 93 degrees at El Centro, Calif.
