MOUNT PULASKI -- Autumn brings many
changes and contradictions -- hot days, but cool nights; shorts and
T-shirts, but jackets when the sun slips away; lingering summer
sports, but talk of soup, pies and comfort food. Zion Lutheran
Church of Mount Pulaski had its annual Family Fall Fest on Sunday at
the church's Elkhart Center -- the former Elkhart Grade School. The
congregation found a way to celebrate the transition from summer to
fall during several afternoon activities.

The event began with a rousing game of baseball for everyone 13 and
older. As the innings moved along, the grill was heated up for hot
dogs, kids played tag around the yard, and the swings and playground
equipment were busy. Observers of the baseball game assembled a lawn
chair stadium to watch the game and chat.
As the day began to cool down and jackets came out, a fire pit
that had roasted hot dogs was stoked to add some warmth. Members who
brought a pumpkin dessert could enter a friendly competition, and
judges tested the homemade items after a late afternoon dinner
break.
The congregation has an event almost monthly and the community is
invited to attend. From 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, the church will host
its second annual Trunk or Treat at the church, 203 S. Vine in Mount
Pulaski. There will be costume contests, a cake walk, free food,
candy and a hayride. For more information, contact the church at
217-792-5965.
