[October 26, 2011] (AP) The nation will start to see more active weather on Wednesday as a storm begins to develop in the Rockies around Colorado. A second storm will weaken as it moves into the Northeast from the Great Lakes.

The Rockies storm will bring rain to the high plains of Wyoming and Colorado while it drops light to moderate snow over the high elevations in the mountains. Rain will also fall across the Southwest, where thunderstorms over Arizona and New Mexico could bring locally heavy rain.

Lighter precipitation will fall through the central Plains into the Midwest, where the intensity will begin to increase approaching the Appalachian Mountains. Clouds will spill over the Appalachians into the Northeast, as will some light rain. Clouds and rain will mostly be limited to the Mid-Atlantic coast northward, as the Southeast can expect another dry sunny day.

As the Colorado storm develops, cold air will fill in to the northern Plains, and overnight temperatures will drop well below freezing in the Dakotas. Cold air will also filter into the Rockies, where some temperatures in the highest elevations will drop below zero.

In the West, temperatures will begin a warming phase expected to last through the week. Areas along the coast will be especially warm, with highs in the mid-to upper 60s expected to push as far north as the central Oregon coast. Farther south, California will see coastal temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a morning low of 16 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 91 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
