[October 27, 2011] (AP) Calmer weather conditions will return to Colorado and the central Rockies on Thursday as the system over the region drops southeastward.

As the system exits and part of an associated cold front drops through Texas, a mixture of rain and snow is expected to become more widespread from northeastern New Mexico through northern Texas Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Cold air and snowfall in northeastern New Mexico may result in a thin coating of ice, leading to hazardous driving conditions. Conditions in New Mexico should generally improve as the system moves further into Texas by the afternoon. While warm ground temperatures will limit any real notable snow accumulation in northern Texas, areas of the southwestern panhandle may see an inch or less by the morning.

The front will continue tapping into Gulf moisture as it extends from the southern Plains through the Mid-Atlantic through the afternoon. This will result in showers and thunderstorm development primarily to the north of this disturbance, from northeastern Texas and Oklahoma through the Ozarks and eastern valleys into the Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic. Cold air in the Northeast may support accumulating snowfall in the twin tiers of Pennsylvania and New York through Thursday evening.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of 6 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 91 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
