Last Tuesday Kate Nikles and Sam Opperman refurbished Santa's hut
with a new coat of gingerbread-colored paint. On Saturday afternoon
five NHS volunteers decorated the hut with candy canes, garland and
fluffy "snow" along the roofline. Opperman and Nikles were joined by
Daniel Bacon, Tommy Harris and Matthew Barker to put final touches
on the little building in preparation for the upcoming Christmas
season. Main Street board president Roger Matson dropped by to
take a picture of the hut while students were busy with the
decorations.
"Someone has volunteered their shed to store the hut," Matson
said, "so it won't go through so much during the offseason and won't
need a paint job next year."
On Sunday NHS members participated in a mandatory activity when
they went trick-or-treating for canned goods and boxed items to be
donated to the Lincoln/Logan Food Pantry. Organizing in
mid-afternoon, groups headed in different directions across the city
of Lincoln to knock on doors for food, instead of candy and treats.

Pantry coordinator Bill Overton gave tours to several students
who were new to the experience. As groups arrived at the food
pantry, they counted canned goods and other food items.
At a Wednesday morning meeting, Judy Dopp, NHS co-sponsor and
LCHS teacher, had challenged the students to collect more food items
than had been gathered last year -- around 1,000. At the end of the
afternoon Sunday, the count was 1,300. While the competition
depended on the generosity of the community, it was good to see the
number increase in order to benefit the pantry's inventory and those
in need in the area.
