[September 01, 2011]  (AP)  The western half of the country will continue to see sunny and dry conditions on Thursday, while the northern states and most of the East Coast will see widespread areas of wet weather. A high pressure system positioned over the Southwest will continue to bring pleasant and mild weather to the West Coast. However, a trough off the coast will bring onshore flow, producing low clouds and fog along the coasts in the morning. In addition, monsoon moisture will trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms across parts of the Four Corners region.

In the north, a low pressure system will move eastward off the Rockies and to the northern Plains, pushing a cold front extending from the upper Midwest to central Plains. Showers and possible severe thunderstorms will develop ahead of this front, bringing strong winds and heavy downpours to some areas.

To the east, a low pressure system over the Great Lakes will push a weak frontal boundary extending to the mid-Mississippi Valley. In addition, the rotation of this system will bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms to parts of the Ohio Valley, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Meanwhile, a high pressure system along the eastern coast will produce mostly sunny conditions for the coastal areas.

To the south, moisture associated with Invest 93 will trigger showers and thunderstorms along the coasts of the Gulf states as the system moves into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. The tropical wave is expected to push farther into the Gulf of Mexico this week, where it will have a good chance of developing into a tropical cyclone. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of 30 degrees at Redmond, Ore., to a high of 107 degrees at Enid, Okla.
