[September 07, 2011] (AP) The low pressure area, Post Tropical Cyclone Lee, will continue to influence the East Coast Wednesday as it slowly lifts north up across the Tennessee and Ohio valleys.

Abundant tropical moisture will continue to stream northward, resulting in an expansive area of precipitation from the Ohio and Tennessee valleys eastward across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Florida. Local heavy rainfall is expected in the higher terrain and portions of western Virginia, western Maryland and Pennsylvania through early Thursday. These rains are possible to cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides. Also, there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms in central Virginia, with a couple of tornados and damaging winds.

In Texas, dangerous wildfires are likely to persist over central and eastern parts of the state. Smoke creates poor air quality and many of these fires are near 0 percent contained. Thus, evacuations remain in effect. These fires will remain difficult to contain due to drought conditions with dry vegetation, low relative humidity and no rain in the forecast.

Moving to the West, monsoonal moisture will continue to provide a threat for showers and thunderstorms across the Four Corners region. Otherwise, high pressure will hold over the central and western U.S., with fair and dry conditions.

In the Tropics, Hurricane Katia will continue to move northwestward Wednesday, curving northeast Thursday and Friday, away from any land mass.

Temperaturewise, a cool day is in store over the East Coast Wednesday. Highs are expected mainly in the 60s and lower 70s. On the other hand, widespread 80s and 90s will continue over the interior of the West and Plains, with a few 100s in the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday have ranged from a morning low of 30 degrees at Land O' Lakes, Wis., to a high of 102 degrees at Goodyear, Ariz.
