[September 24, 2011] (AP) A strong low pressure system is expected to allow for wet weather to persist across the East Coast on Saturday.

The system was forecast to continue spinning over the Great Lakes and Northeast, allowing for a front to stretch down the East Coast into the Gulf of Mexico. Moisture from the Gulf and Atlantic Ocean is expected to feed additional energy into this system, and some storms were expected to turn severe with strong winds and heavy rains.

Flooding was expected to create problems across the East Coast because this system has lingered over the region for the past few days. Meanwhile, the center of the system also was expected to kick up scattered showers over the Great Lakes and Midwest. These showers were expected to be much lighter, with only a few mild thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, out West, dry and mild conditions were expected to persist from the West Coast to the Plains. A dominant ridge of high pressure stretched well into Canada and helped keep moisture well out of the region. Daytime highs were expected to return to the 70s and 80s across the northern Plains, while the southern Plains remained in the 90s. In the Northwest, a trough of low pressure over British Columbia was expected to advance into the Pacific Northwest. While rain showers will not yet reach into Oregon and Washington, the region was expected to see increasingly cloudy skies.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a morning low of 24 degrees at Angel Fire, N.M., to a high of 104 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
