The Rena's captain and navigating officer have pleaded guilty to mishandling the vessel and altering ship documents after the crash. The court has suppressed the names of the men, who are both Filipino. They are due to be sentenced in May. New Zealand's government has estimated the cost of the cleanup at 130 million New Zealand dollars ($108 million), most of which will be met by insurers. Salvage crews, who have removed more than 1,000 tons of oil and recovered about half the ship's 1,368 containers, plan to continue their work on the Rena once a storm in the area subsides.
