[April 12, 2012]  Christian Child Care open house Thursday features local child growth groups, book fair and introduces new program

Parents of all children: Christian Child Care, at 721 Wyatt Ave., is having an open house on Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The health department will do a car seat check and have car seats for families that may need them.

Inside the building, there will be snacks provided by Thorntons gas stations, a Scholastic book fair and a group of local programs to check out. Scheduled are Scentsy, Melaleuca, Lincoln Parent Center, public health, Avon and more. The Scholastic book fair is a buy-and-take, so if you want to purchase a book that evening, you can take it that night. The book fair will continue Friday. Also, Christian Child Care parents are invited to sign up for parent-teacher meetings to set goals for the summer for the children.

Christian Child Care is also introducing a new program for the summer. The center is starting a "begindergarten" for children 4-6 getting ready for kindergarten. This is a part-day program that will only be in five-week sessions. Children will learn skills to give them a jump-start for the first day at school. This will fill in the gap for children that may not have had any pre-K experience or do not have a program that will go through the summer. For more information, contact Coleen Moore, director, at 732-5750.

Spring is in the air -- and so is art

ELKHART -- Dragonfly Art Studio is planning special events on April 14 and 21 to coincide with Elkhart's Wildflower Weekends. The studio is on the upper floor of the refurbished 1889 building at 102 Gov. Oglesby St. in the village of Elkhart.

The art studio will have an exhibition of student work on display both weekends, highlighting floral painting. Artist Renee Sisk's beautiful original paintings, and those of her students, adorn the walls of the studio. The studio's second-story windows provide a great view of historic downtown Elkhart.

There is no charge for viewing the exhibition.

On April 14 from noon to 4 p.m., Sisk will also offer a class in painting bluebells with acrylic paint on canvas, and on April 21 from 9 a.m. to noon, there will be a watercolor class on painting bluebells or other native wildflowers. Sisk will lead your family, group or weekend guests in an inspired and enjoyable experience creating paintings that you didn't think you'd ever be able to draw.
