[April 05, 2012]  Hippity-hoppity, Easter is on its way! Welcome the Easter Bunny on Saturday at the Lincoln Park District. The park district's annual Easter egg hunt will begin at 10 a.m. on the driving range. In the event of inclement weather, the hunt will be on the indoor tennis courts. The little ones, up to 2 years old, will begin at 10 a.m., and there will be 10 minutes between each age group, ending with ages 7-8.

This free event is made possible with the support of Maple Ridge Care Centre and the Kiwanis Club of Lincoln. CITV5 will film this event for future viewing.

Play ball! It is that time of year already. The park district encourages you to register your children for baseball and softball. This instructional program is fun and focused on teaching your young person the skills to enjoy a game that may be played for many years. Learn the basics and sportsmanship while interacting with teammates. Pitching, throwing, fielding and running the bases are covered in every age division. The registration period has been extended, so it's not too late to be placed on a team. Give it a try.

The Lincoln Park District along with the Logan County Sports Commission will sponsor Major League Baseball's Pitch, Hit and Run competition at the park district's Tri-Plex on Saturday, April 21, starting at 8 a.m. This will be part of the district's annual skills grading. Boys ages 7 and 8 are scheduled from 8 until 10 a.m., and 9- and 10-year-olds will begin at 10 a.m. and end by noon. Boys ages 11-14 will begin at 1 p.m. and end by 3 p.m. The age determination will be the competitor's age as of Aug. 1. The event is free of charge. Winners of each area of competition advance to sectional action in Riverton. Each age group's winners advance, with the culmination of winners competing at Busch Stadium in St. Louis in July.

The park district is planning a fun-filled summer for you. The district will offer a brand-new program called "Awesome Afternoons." Discover an afternoon adventure of great proportions at Lincoln Park District. Make the most of your summer in an opportunity to play, learn and create. Field trips around the town, outdoor-indoor fun and games, crafting, and cooking will come together for the ultimate learning experience. Come make your summer an adventure with new activities every day. To name only a few of the fun expeditions, participants will tour the fire department, discover how groceries get on the shelves and go on scavenger hunts with clues that will turn everyone into Inspector Clouseau.

The goal is to offer this weekly program at much the same price our young people would have spent to swim. Included in this nominal weekly fee is swimming at Lincoln College on Monday and Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. Awesome Afternoons will start on-site at the park district on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The exploring expeditions will leave from there. Remember, anyone ages 5 and up is welcome to join Team Park District. The kickoff is scheduled for Monday, June 4, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Besides swimming at Lincoln College on Monday and Thursday afternoons, water aerobics will be available in the evenings. As the time gets a little closer, watch this column for more information as it becomes available.

The park district will offer dancing lessons beginning Monday, April 23. If you have class reunions or receptions to attend this summer and want to brush up on your skills, this will be perfect for you. Join Mike and Julie Bieser as they share their talents. Julie and Mike have been instructors at the park district for many years. They make this class a lot of fun, and their teaching technique will have you gliding across the floor in no time. Plan on learning the swing, cha-cha and the nightclub two-step. Classes will be four weeks on Mondays, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $50 for in-district residents and $60 for participants from outside the district.
