Sales up for Pulitzer fiction finalists

[April 18, 2012]  NEW YORK (AP) -- With no fiction winner for Pulitzer followers to buy this year, some are settling for one or more of the three finalists.

The publishing industry was surprised and angered when Pulitzer officials announced Monday that no fiction prize would be given, with the prize board allegedly unable to agree on a winner.

But sales have increased for the three books that nearly won: David Foster Wallace's "The Pale King," Karen Russell's "Swamplandia!" and Denis Johnson's "Train Dreams." All were in the top 500 on Amazon.com as of Tuesday night, and hardcover copies of "Train Dreams" were out of stock.

The paperback edition of Manning Marable's "Malcolm X: A Life of Invention," winner of the history prize, had also sold out on Amazon.com.
