LINCOLN -- Margaret Miller Hickey, 90,
a Lincoln native, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, in Roswell, Ga.

Margaret Miller Hickey, beloved wife of Lawrence T.
Hickey, died Thursday, April 12, 2012 in Roswell, GA
after suffering a heart attack. Predeceased by her
husband, she leaves five children: Lawrence T.
Hickey, Jr. and his wife Margaret of North Augusta,
SC; Ann Hickey Peloquin and her husband Phillip of
Brooklyn Heights, NY; Peter A. Hickey and his wife
Laurie of Marietta, GA; John M. Hickey and his wife
Sharon of Santa Fe, NM; and Joseph P. Hickey and his
wife Ellen of Lake Forest, IL. She was also
grandmother to 14 adored grandchildren. In addition
to her husband, Margie's parents, brother, Burke
Miller, and daughter-in-law, Patricia Hickey,
predeceased her.
Margie was born on October 16, 1921 in Lincoln, IL to Leland
and Catherine Miller. She attended local schools and
excelled as a pianist under the direction of her beloved
aunt, Florence Miller. Just prior to turning 17, she left
Lincoln to attend college at Smith College in Northampton,
MA from which she was graduated in 1942, cum laude. Upon
graduation, Margie joined several of her college friends to
work for the U.S. Office of Price Administration in
Washington, DC. Near the end of World War II, she returned
to Illinois, attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School and
became an executive secretary at A. B. Dick & Co. in
Chicago. She met and married her husband, Larry, in
Evanston, IL in 1947. |
Together, Margie and Larry lived and raised their
five children in Milwaukee, WI, Cleveland, OH,
Barrington, RI and finally in Town and Country (St.
Louis), MO where they resided for 39 years until
Larry's death in late 2006. In early 2007, she moved
to a retirement community in Roswell, GA.
Margie was an active volunteer throughout her life in all
the cities in which she lived and was a member of the Junior
League, the Garden Clubs of America and the Smith College
Clubs. She and Larry especially enjoyed a good bridge game
and once Larry retired, they traveled extensively throughout
the world. For over 20 years, they wintered on Hutchinson
Island in Stuart, FL. For 30 years, Margie managed her
family farms in Logan County. Forever true to her
mid-western roots, Margie and Larry cultivated a vast
vegetable garden at their St. Louis home which gave them
great pleasure.
Visitation will be held Friday, April 20, 2012 from 6:00
pm-8:00 pm at Fricke, Calvert, Schrader Funeral Home, 127 S.
Logan Street, Lincoln, IL, with a rosary preceding at 5:45
p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy
Family Church of Lincoln on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at
11:00 am. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, Lincoln, IL.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests
donations be made in Margie's name to the Alzheimer's
Association. |
