To help ensure an adequate blood supply for the region, Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, 200 Stahlhut Drive, is hosting a blood drive on the Central Illinois Community Blood Center donor bus on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Register now for 2nd annual Moving Forward 5K

Registration is open for the second annual Moving Forward 5K Run/Walk, scheduled for Oct. 13 at Edward R. Madigan State Park. At 9 a.m., rain or shine, walkers and runners of all fitness levels will take off on a route that meanders through grassland and woodland. All are encouraged to join friends and family and enjoy the fall scenery while being active.

The event is brought to the community by the Abraham Lincoln Healthcare Foundation and Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital's Sportscare.

For those who register before Sept. 15, there is a discounted registration of $20, which includes a men's or women's dry-fit race shirt. After Sept. 15, the registration fee will increase to $25. Shirts are not guaranteed for late registrants.

"Our mission is to improve the health of the people and communities we serve, and what better way than through exercise," said Todd Mourning, physical therapist and manager of rehab services at ALMH. "I hope that this event encourages people of all fitness levels to get moving forward towards good health."

Monthly glass recycling collection

The Logan County Joint Solid Waste Agency, in collaboration with the Lincoln Woman's Club and Verallia Saint-Gobain Containers, will have its monthly glass collection on Saturday at the Logan County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to noon. People bringing in glass are to use the Main Gate entrance.

Participants are reminded that only container glass will be accepted during the collection. Container glass is any glass that originally held either a food or beverage product. All colors of glass will be accepted. The glass recycling program does not accept broken glass due to safety issues.

Participants are asked to thoroughly rinse all containers and to remove all plastic or metal lids, sleeves and rings. Labels, either foil or paper, may be left on the containers. Due to the large volume of glass being collected, the glass recycling program reserves the right to refuse any glass that does not meet the preparation guidelines.

The glass recycling program does not accept light bulbs, fluorescent lights, window glass, mirrors, ceramics, dishware or CorningWare items. Participants are asked to comply with the glass collection guidelines, as a single piece of ceramic material or a light bulb can contaminate an entire load of glass.

Glass is not to be left at the site prior to the hours of the collection.

Monthly electronics recycling collection

Habitat for Humanity Logan County will host its monthly electronics recycling collection on Saturday at the Habitat for Humanity warehouse, 915 Woodlawn Road, from 9 a.m. to noon. The collection is offered free of charge to the public.

The following items will be accepted:

• Computer equipment, including laptop and desktop personal computers, hard drives, monitors, keyboards, printers, scanners, cords and cables, and CD-ROM, DVD, Zip and tape drives.

• Entertainment equipment, including TVs, radios, stereo and game systems, game controls, VCR and DVD players, and cameras.

• Small business equipment, including phones, copiers, typewriters, fax machines and calculators.

• Small household and countertop appliances will also be accepted, as well as aluminum, copper, brass and stainless steel items.

Electronic equipment is not to be left at the site and is not collected outside of the hours of the collection.

Lincoln Rotary Club annual chicken dinner fundraiser will be Aug. 16

The Lincoln Rotary Club is sponsoring a drive-thru chicken dinner on Thursday, Aug. 16. Meals can be picked up from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the parking lot next to the Farm Bureau building, at the corner of Pulaski and McLean streets.

Tickets for the Nelson's grilled half-chicken dinner can be purchased from any Rotarian or by calling the Lincoln/Logan Chamber of Commerce office, 735-2385, where tickets are also available. The cost of the tickets is $8.

All proceeds from the fundraiser go to benefit community projects.

District 27 starts school year Aug. 17

Opening day for Lincoln Elementary School District 27 has been scheduled for Aug. 17.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade are to report to their respective schools at 8:30 a.m. on opening day. Lincoln Junior High School students, grades six through eight, are to report at 8:15 a.m.

School will be dismissed on the first day at 10:30 a.m. for grades one through eight at all buildings in the district and at 10 a.m. for kindergartners.

Elkhart Historical Society presents 'Elephants in Lincoln: A Mammoth Discovery'

ELKHART -- In a dinner lecture Aug. 17 at the Wild Hare Café in Elkhart, Dennis Campbell will present a "big game safari" in search of elephants in Lincoln. The evening event will begin at 5:30 and is sponsored by the Elkhart Historical Society.

In the past seven years a remarkable number of Ice Age fossils have been discovered in the creeks around Lincoln. Geology and biology students at Lincoln College have been involved with some spectacular finds -- including the discovery of a woolly mammoth, presently considered one of the largest and last woolly mammoths on the continent. The presentation in Elkhart will detail the discovery of Judd, the Lincoln College woolly mammoth, by Judd McCullum, a Lincoln College student. Since that discovery on Lincoln College property in 2005, local residents have revealed to the college and to scientists at the Illinois State Museum many new records of additional Pleistocene mammal species that lived in this area thousands of years ago.

Campbell, who holds a doctorate in zoology from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, has been a professor of biology and geology at Lincoln College in Lincoln for almost 20 years. He is currently engaged in the development of Creekside: an outdoor environmental education center at nearby Sugar Creek for use by the college and local community organizations. Although a native of Texas, he has worked as a biologist throughout the South Pacific, Mexico and the United States.

His lecture to the Elkhart Historical Society on bats last October was educational and entertaining. The mammoth presentation promises to be another excellent evening.

Ashleigh Yarcho is named Lincoln College cheer coach

Lincoln College has announced Ashleigh Yarcho as the new cheer and dance coach for Lincoln College.

Yarcho is a graduate of Lincoln College and Illinois State University. She was a member of the cheer team while attending Lincoln College and had coaching experience later.

"Ashleigh brings experience and a lot of energy to the program," said Dave Klemm, Lincoln College athletic director. "We are excited to have her in our department."

Community Action Head Start Logan County recruitment

Community Action Head Start, a free program for income eligible-families with children from birth to age 5, is recruiting in Logan County for the 2012-2013 program year.

Head Start is a federally funded preschool program that serves income-eligible families and children between the ages of 3 and 5 years. Logan County Head Start provides center-based preschool services and runs during the school year, beginning Aug. 27.

Early Head Start is a child development program that serves income-eligible children and families including pregnant mothers, infants and toddlers up to age 3. Early Head Start provides home-based services throughout Logan County and runs the full calendar year, beginning Aug. 27.

Children do not have to have a disability to qualify. The program welcomes all eligible children. Additional services, including screenings and access to medical, dental, vision services are what set Head Start apart from other child development and preschool programs. Transportation is available to children and families to participate and receive full benefit of the program.
