[August 13, 2012]  SPRINGFIELD -- The food and nutrition department at Memorial Medical Center will offer an 11-week course to help people learn how to conquer unhealthy eating habits.

The course, Choosing to Lose, will begin with a free introductory session at 5 p.m. Sept. 10, in E-73 in the Wedeberg Conference Center. At the conclusion of the session, participants can decide if they want to enroll in the remaining 10 classes, which will run from Sept. 17 until Nov. 19.

Choosing to Lose classes will be led by a clinical dietitian with Memorial Medical Center. All of the hourlong classes will start at 5 p.m. Mondays in E-73.

"A lot of people are unhappy with their weight because of a lifetime of poor eating habits," said Gayle Jennings, a clinical dietitian at Memorial Medical Center. "Choosing to Lose can help establish a healthy relationship with food while gaining a better understanding of nutrition."

Some of the topics that will be covered are emotional eating, portion control and dining out, weight loss myths and fad diets, and protein and healthy snacking.

"The goal of a healthy weight management regimen is to reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, sleep apnea, certain cancers and osteoporosis," Jennings said. "Our participants will learn how to lower their risk factors for these diseases and develop healthy lifestyle habits that ultimately lead to weight loss and better overall health."
