Morning and afternoon storms in the forecast

[August 16, 2012]  The National Weather Service in Lincoln released a weather outlook at 6:02 a.m. Thursday for portions of central and east-central Illinois. This outlook is for the counties of Cass, Champaign, Christian, DeWitt, Douglas, Fulton, Knox, Logan, Macon, Marshall, Mason, McLean, Menard, Morgan, Moultrie, Peoria, Piatt, Sangamon, Schuyler, Scott, Stark, Tazewell, Vermilion and Woodford.

Thursday and Thursday night

An approaching cold front will trigger thunderstorms across the area today. Some of the storms could become severe during the afternoon, particularly east of the Illinois River. Damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph and large hail greater than quarter-size will be the primary threats.

Spotter activation may be required today, mainly between noon and 6 p.m.

Friday through Wednesday

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

An approaching cold front will bring a round of potentially severe weather to much of central and southeast Illinois today. Thunderstorms will cross the Mississippi River into northwest Illinois early this morning; however, these are not expected to be severe.

Storms will redevelop along the advancing front during the afternoon, primarily east of the Illinois River. The main threats from any storms today will be damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph and large hail greater than quarter-size.

The storms will settle into southeast Illinois during the evening before dissipating overnight.
