Arlene Van Hook has been named director
of volunteer services at The Christian Village. In her new role, she
coordinates the activities of the 150-plus volunteers who serve in
the nursing home every month.

Van Hook brings to her new post a wealth of volunteer experience,
both at Arlington Countryside Church in Arlington and at Jefferson
Street Christian Church in Lincoln. Van Hook is seeking more
volunteers to serve at The Christian Village.
"Volunteers give emotional support to our residents by listening
to them and reassuring them when necessary," she said. "Cheering
someone up while they're experiencing the trials of poor health can
be a very gratifying experience. To get them to crack a smile -- and
maybe even laugh -- is a great service. It takes a very little touch
to make their day better."
Volunteers of all ages are needed to visit residents, help with
activities or provide entertainment, she said. Residents enjoy
seeing babies and young children. Older children can read, sing or
play games. College students can visit residents while they're home
on break.

Adult volunteers are always welcome, too. Those who volunteer on
a regular basis often end up becoming friends with their fellow
volunteers, as well as with the residents.
Individuals or groups interested in volunteering at The Christian
Village can contact Van Hook at 732-2189.
