LINCOLN- Shirley B. “Shirl” Marsh, 89, of Lincoln passed away at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital on Monday, January, 30, 2012 at 2:20 a.m.
Mrs. Marsh was born on August 1, 1922, in Harvard, IL to Lewis and Rose Dengel Bergeron. On January 17, 1948, she married Francis L. Marsh in Decatur, IL. He preceded her in death on June 4, 2011. She is survived by one son: Michael (Pam) Marsh of Mesa, AZ; one daughter: Carrie (Mike) Benvenuti of Newport Coast, CA; one brother: Professor Clifton Bergeron of Urbana, IL; a niece, and nephew and several cousins. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln with Tim Searby officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home. A funeral mass will be at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday at Holy Family Church in Lincoln with Rev. Jeffrey Laible officiating. Burial will be held on June 4, 2012 at Camp Butler National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Butler.
During WW II, Shirley worked as a secretary for troop’s movement at Ft. Sheridan. After the war, Shirley worked at the Veteran’s Hospital in Great Lakes while saving money to attend college. She attended Millikin University in Decatur while working at the Dean’s office at the University of Illinois. After her marriage to Fran, they moved to Waukegan where they began their family. They moved to Lincoln in 1968. After her children were grown, she worked at the State of Illinois in the Budget and Data Processing department until her retirement.
Shirley enjoyed golf, bridge, walking and gardening. She was a member of Holy Family Church in Lincoln. She will be warmly remembered for her sense of adventure and her endless caring and concern for others.
