The original bridge almost disappears into the park's natural environment. The Logan County Parks and Trails Foundation board wanted the new bridge to be a structure that will also fit into the surroundings.

Open steps in the old design will be replaced with a closed stair approach at both ends of the bridge. Safety issues were addressed with the new design, but changes are subtle and will not drastically change the bridge's image.

Original wooden support poles will be replaced with steel poles at the ends of the suspension footbridge over Kickapoo Creek. Old poles were rotting and would have eventually threatened the integrity of the bridge.

A three-man crew from Freesen Inc., Bluffs, Ill., began in early December and returned from a holiday break. A welder joined the crew this week to attach steel poles and I-beams to the approach sections.
