Mardi Gras party will raise the roof at Carroll Catholic School

[January 10, 2012]  The Elks Country Club will be transformed into the "Big Easy" on Feb. 18, when food, fun and dancing bring New Orleans' carnival to Lincoln to celebrate Mardi Gras in style. The event is being organized by a fundraising committee from Holy Family Parish to raise money for a new roof at Carroll Catholic School.

The committee intends to make the party an annual event to benefit the school, but this year the entire building is in need of a new roof. Bids are currently being accepted for the project, so a definite figure is not available yet for the roof replacement. Those close to the situation are expecting a cost of at least $100,000.

"We formed a committee because we wanted to do something to help with the roof project," committee co-chair Melissa Cox said, "and we thought creating an event that was fun and different would give people a good reason to come out and enjoy themselves while supporting a good cause.

"The event is for the entire community to enjoy," Cox said. "The roof is a major project. We're hoping the community will help us take care of the school by participating in this fun and unique event." 

Committee members for the party are Dr. Kristen Green-Morrow, Kay Armbruster, Doug and Regina Board, Steve Kraft, and Wayne and Melissa Cox.

The Mardi Gras event will start at 6 p.m. with a New Orleans-style dinner, including King Cake, a traditional Big Easy carnival dessert. Dinner will be catered by Ted of Ted's Garage, Clinton. After dinner a court jester will host Mardi Gras and New Orleans trivia, and a dance will follow from 8:30 p.m. to midnight.

"There won't be a silent auction or any other activity that could be used to collect money," Cox said. "We believe that if people attend the Mardi Gras party, they are already making a contribution to our effort. We don't want them to continue to give all night, just come out and have a good time."

Cox did say there would be special prizes awarded during the evening, most probably for trivia questions. So if you plan to attend, brush up on Mardi Gras and New Orleans facts and information.

Music will be provided by the Patty Deener Band from Mason City. Selections will include something for everybody -- ballroom, classic rock, '50s and '60s oldies, big band, and more. Tropical drinks, Mardi Gras favorites and regular selections will be available at the cash bar.

Table sponsorships are available at levels named for the three Mardi Gras colors: purple, $200 for two people; green, $400 for four; gold, $600 for a table for eight. Businesses and individuals interested in sponsoring a table should contact Melissa and Wayne Cox, 217-735-2662.   

Regular ticket prices are $25 per person or $45 per couple. Cost to attend the dance only, starting at 8:30 p.m., is $5 per person or $10 per couple. Event tickets may be purchased at the Carroll Catholic School office or the Rectory. A letter of invitation and order form will be included in the CCS Thursday newsletter.
