 The hottest areas of the East will be Texas and the Southeast as the cold front will fail to make significant progress into the area by the afternoon. Thus, continue to expect temperatures in the 90s and some 100s for this region. Cooler conditions are expected in the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic due to cooler air moving into the region.
The cold front will also bring rain and thunderstorms from the western Plains through the Mid-Atlantic. There is a slight possibility that some of these thunderstorms could turn severe. Severe thunderstorms include heavy rain, strong winds and large hail.
As the intense heat wave is winding down in the East, a new intense heat wave will be gripping the West due to a strong high pressure system that will expand well into western Canada.
This high pressure system will produce widespread 90s west of the Rockies, while afternoon conditions could reach the triple digits for some areas of Montana. The Southwest will be the hot spot in the country as triple-digit temperatures will be commonplace. Some areas in the Desert Southwest will reach into the 110s for the next several days. To find relief from the heat, one would have to travel to the coast, where temperatures will be in the 70s for the most part.
The Southeast will rise into the 90s and 100s, while the Northeast will see temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Southwest will rise into the 100s and 110s, while the Northwest will see temperatures in the 90s and some 100s.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a morning low of 39 degrees at Truckee, Calif., to a high of 109 degrees at Thermal, Calif.
