"We commend the House Agriculture Committee for successfully marking
up its version of the bill," said Philip Nelson, Illinois Farm
Bureau president. "We urge the House leadership to schedule floor
time as soon as possible so that the bill can be moved through the
full House and into conference with the Senate."
Specifically, the Illinois Farm Bureau acknowledged the work of
three members of the Illinois delegation who serve on the House
Agriculture Committee: U.S. Rep. Timothy Johnson, 15th Congressional
District; U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, 14th Congressional District; and
U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling, 17th Congressional District.
House debate on the bill is timely, the Illinois Farm Bureau
says. As Congress determines the future of crop insurance and a
safety net for farmers, crops and livestock in southern Illinois
continue to feel the effects of a drought that is widely being
compared to the drought of 1988. During more than a year of policy
review from June 2010 to August 2011, Illinois Farm Bureau members
agreed that crop insurance is by far the most valuable component of
the farm policy safety net and should serve as the cornerstone of
the 2012 Farm Bill.
