Question: What is recommended to safely grill at home?

Answer:

First of all the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urges consumers to check grills for recalls.

If you have a gas grill check all hoses for cracks, brittleness, holes and leaks. Make sure there are no sharp bends in the hose or tubing as these will be areas where the hose may fail. Regularly check for leaks at the valve by using soapy solution and identify any bubbles that may indicate a leak.

Regularly clean the grill and keep the grease traps clean to reduce flare-ups and grease fires.

Use grills outside only in well ventilated areas. Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of gas and charcoal grills, never use in a garage or in the home due to potential CO poisoning.

Never leave grills unattended and adjust the flames from the gas and spread out charcoal coals to keep down flare-ups.

Keep children away from the grilling area due to hot surfaces.

Enjoy the fun of cooking outdoors safely and be prepared for the unexpected.
