[July 23, 2012]  BROADWELL -- Ernie and Fran Edwards Route 66 International Appreciation Day has been set for Aug. 5, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Pig Hip restaurant site in Broadwell. The free celebration will be a time for the public to visit, reminisce and enjoy a free cookout.

At 2 p.m., the Route 66 Preservation Committee will dedicate the restored Pig Hip sign and marker.

Ernie Edwards, an iconic figure known for his tall white chef's hat and equally tall tales, owned and operated the Pig Hip on Route 66 in Broadwell for many years. He was one of the initial inductees into the Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame in June 1990 and is one of only three Logan County residents to receive the honor.

Edwards died April 16, 2012. He and his wife will be honored on what would have been his 95th birthday.

During the celebration, the Route 66 Association of Illinois will feature a cookout, and the Railsplitter Antique Auto Club of Lincoln will display classic cars. Visitors can also sign the Route 66 car hood provided by the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway and the Illinois Office of Tourism.

At 3 p.m., there will be tours of The Mill in Lincoln, a Route 66 preservation project inspired by Ernie Edwards to finally save the historic building from destruction.
