Separately, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications data showed jobless people totaled 2.97 million people in May, some 170,000 fewer than the same month the previous year. The unemployment rate declined 0.2 percentage points from April to 4.4 percent. Manufacturing, transportation, medical and welfare sectors all gained jobs. Japan's core consumer price index, which excludes fresh food but includes energy prices, slipped 0.1 percent in May from a year earlier, according to the ministry.
