Leonard Lehner

[May 01, 2012]  LINCOLN -- Leonard R. Lehner, 88, of Lincoln,  died Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 5:15 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Leonard R. Lehner of Lincoln, IL, peacefully entered eternal glory at 5:15 PM on April 25, 2012, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Lincoln, IL, May 22, 1923, the son of Frank and Catherine Jacobs Lehner. He married Dorothy Ann Kollmann, Spokane, WA, January 10, 1946. She preceded him in death November 26, 2008.

Leonard was a graduate of Lincoln Community High School in 1943. During World War II, he was stationed on troop transports Zania and LaGrange as Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class in the United States Navy. His service included time spent in the South Pacific on Okinawa. After serving in the Navy, he and Dorothy settled in Lincoln.

A plumber by trade, Leonard spent most of his career working at Lincoln Developmental and Logan Correctional Centers. He was also an accomplished carpenter and built the family home in which he and Dorothy raised their four children.

Leonard was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 137, and the Logan County Genealogical and Historical Society. He was honored to attend the September 2011 Land of Lincoln Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

Leonard had a zest for life as evidenced by his devotion to his family, his good humor and his cheerful demeanor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy, sister Frances Ritterbush, infant brother, half-sister, and three half-brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, April 29, 2012, at the church, with arrangements by Peasley Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1:30 – 3 PM Sunday before the service. Burial with military rites will be on Monday, April 30, 2012, at 10 AM at New Union Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Zion Lutheran School.
