Coach Buzz Williams announced Monday that Mayo is unable to practice or play indefinitely.
The 6-foot-3 native of Huntington, W.Va., appeared in 35 games for the Golden Eagles as a freshman, averaging 7.9 points and 2.7 rebounds. Marquette finished 27-8 last season, losing to Florida in the West Regional semifinals.
The Golden Eagles open the season Friday against No. 4 Ohio State in the Carrier Classic at Charleston, S.C.
Mayo is the younger brother of Dallas Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo.
