As we embark on our usually last summer
getaway weekend, we would like to bring special attention to safety
for those who choose to travel.

As the remnants of Hurricane Isaac approach central Illinois, we
have been informed by the National Weather Service in Lincoln of
several days of rain. Sometimes heavy rain will be possible, with
wind in the range of 15-25 mph and gusts possibly higher. As of
Friday, the latest prediction for central Illinois is that 3-7
inches of rain could fall over the holiday weekend. This storm
reminds me of the first time that rain is associated with the ice
and snow melting off, because our ground is so hard from the drought
that most of the water will rapidly run off and cause flash flooding
because it will be full of debris. Also be aware that it has been
quite some time since heavy rain has washed away oil residue from
the roadways as well.
If you choose to travel, make sure you have a cellphone, a family
preparedness kit and that someone is aware of your location and
destination. If at all possible, travel in groups.
Even though the gas prices are at an all-time high, the
Department of Transportation is predicting a very high volume of
traffic. We haven't driven in a lot of rain this summer, so slow
down, and if moving water is present on the roadway, turn around --
don't drown.

Also, in heavy rains it is recommended that you do not use your
cruise control, as there is a possibility of hydroplaning.
Please continue to monitor the news channels as to possible
rainfall amounts and possible severe weather.
This rain is very much needed, and if nothing else, will help
support our ponds and stream systems.
