The
current mining operation is run by Hanson Material Services. Rock
has been depleted, and that operation is in the shutdown process.
|
Some
areas are unsightly while under deconstruction. |
|
|
After
an area is no longer mined, a reclamation process is employed to
create favorable settings.
|
Lakes
and grasses get established. Some of the earliest reclamation now
has trees. |
|
The
oldest, most mature area now has trees and creates a tranquil
respite. But it took over 35 years to reach this stage.
|
This
is right beside Salt Creek, where you can see how the area was first
recognized for its rock mining potential. Exposed rock at soil
surface was what brought the property into mining use the first
time.

The
Olsons have lived in their home for only four years. They farm at
the location. They would be the closest residents to the new site.
The view they have now is corn and beans, with a tree line along the
Salt Creek backdrop.
|
This
would change to a view of a rock quarry mining operation expected to
last 17 years and then take years for reclamation to improve the
view. Truck traffic, dust and blasting are a concern to them and
other nearby neighbors. |
